Katherine Rhodes Fields, a native of Mississippi, is an artist whose work cross-pollinates traditional printmaking with contemporary processes, such as non-toxic intaglio, photography, digital media and installation. Her material and process choices are led by her concept, which is based on seeking empirical communication with the use of literary devices, rhetoric and figurative language, such as metaphysical conceits and puns, within the visual realm. Katherine holds an MFA in Studio Arts-Printmaking and MA TESL from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), a BFA Cum Laude from the University of the South (Sewanee) and studied Environmental Art at the Glasgow School of Art in Glasgow Scotland. Katherine is also an internationally recognized artist whose print work was recently displayed as a solo exhibition at the famous Grafički Kolektiv Gallery in Belgrade Serbia. In August of 2014 she was the invited graphic artist from the United States for the Fine Arts International Assembly, in Visegrad, Republic Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovinia. In the late summer of 2015 she returned to Serbia to participate as a representative artist from the United States for the Tourism Organization of Kraljevo’s 40th Art Colony at Studenica in Serbia. Her work can be found in printed publications as well as many private and public art collections, including the Mississippi Museum of Art. Katherine has also created broadsheets for the famed authors Ace Atkins (Infamous), Jeffrey Eugenides (The Marriage Plot) and the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction winner Adam Johnson (The Orphan Master’s Son). Katherine currently resides in Houston, Texas as Professor of Fine Arts and Head of Printmaking at HCC Central and teaches printmaking at The University of Houston Clear Lake. In September of 2015, Katherine began her tenure as President of Print Matters.
GISSETTE PADILLA, VICE-PRESIDENT
Gissette Padilla was born in Coro, Falcon, Venezuela. She moved to Houston, Texas at the age of 8. She received her BFA from The University of Houston in 2008 and her MFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2011. Her works consist of a combination of drawing, painting, and various printmaking techniques. Her work has been exhibited in a number of juried and group exhibitions in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Boston, New York, Kentucky, Washington, Sequin, Galveston, Oklahoma, Montana and Austria. She has participated in several residencies including, Many Mini Residency at Skydive, Sunblossom Residency, and Sojourn Residency.
SHANTI CONLAN, TREASURER
I've been making things my entire life. The need to create and construct has driven me since I could first hold a pencil or a hammer. Art has saved me, frustrated me, broken my heart and glued it back together again. I was born in Micronesia, where I spent an entire 10 days complete with double rainbows, near-miss hurricanes, the constant sound of waves and people who named me for their own. My childhood in Ann Arbor, Michigan instilled in me a love of nature and a need to be outdoors as much as possible. I've lived in several cities across the U.S. in the time since, attending Houston's HSPVA (and thus not just surviving High School but even, occasionally, relishing it) and earning my BFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After many relocations over the intervening years, I returned to Houston, drawn by my family and the incredibly diverse and empowering art community, and have built my home and studio here.
ELISE ARNOULT MILLER, SECRETARY
Elise Arnoult Miller brings more than fifteen years of auction house, gallery and art advisory experience to her art consultancy. She earned her BA from the University of Houston, and studied art history at the Sorbonne in Paris. She earned her Certificate in Appraisal Studies from NYU, and is an Accredited Member of The Appraisers Association of America. She is also an independent curator, and an advisor to artists and galleries.
ANDIS APPLEWHITE, BOARD MEMBER
Born in Pampa, Texas, Andis Applewhite lives and works in Houston. She is known for her silkscreen prints that tend toward the abstract expressionist or minimalist styles. Her subject matter is an exploration of the dualities in life and her use of spontaneous strokes and color convey a symbolic interpretation of the resulting tension that is felt. To counterbalance this tension she is drawn to creating minimal meditative prints, woodcuts and, most recently video. After graduating San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas, with a degree in graphic arts, Applewhite soon found her voice in printmaking. Her work has been featured in solo shows in Washington D.C. and Houston, TX. She has participated in numerous group shows in Texas, California, North Carolina, Virginia, Ireland, and Shanghai. She is an elected member of the Los Angeles Printmaking Society and California Society of Printmakers. Her print "No Other" is included in the CSP Centennial Book in honor of their 100th and asked to be donated to the Library of Congress.
DEBORAH CLISE, BOARD MEMBER
Raised in Albuquerque, NM, and recently transplanted to Houston, TX, Deborah’s art is constantly attempting to bridge the gap between the two places. The Southwest is a region where Latino culture thrives and economic development seems to have stagnated after 1950. The South is an area where old traditions are well-maintained, but keeping up with Jones’s is a must. She has been a commercial fine art silkscreen printer for four years, and is currently pursuing her BFA in Printmaking from the University of St. Thomas. Printmaking’s diversity aids her expression by lending itself so well to many different processes and outcomes and adding a unique layer of contextual value. The diversity within printmaking is the perfect tool for combining old world techniques with the newest processes of digital media.
LEAMON GREEN, BOARD MEMBER
Green was born in 1959 in the town of Anniston, Alabama. His education includes a Master of Fine Arts at Temple University, Philadelphia (1985), a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art, Ohio (1982) and a Studio Arts Degree from Concord College (1977–79). In 2007, he was awarded the Fulbright award to travel to Tanzania, where he lived and taught for a year. He is currently an associate professor of the fine arts department at Texas Southern University in Houston.
KEN GENERAL, BOARD MEMBER
A 2007 graduate of the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts from Indiana University, Ken General holds a BFA in Printmaking and a BA in Art History. Before moving to Houston the young curator served as Vice-President of Indiana University’s Fine Art Student Association, gallery assistant for a contemporary Chicago art gallery-The Spurious Fugitive, and interned as an assistant for the Midwest Museum of American Art. General has loved printmaking since the age of 7 years old when he literally stumbled upon an after-school art class meant for older students at his elementary school in Yokosuka, Japan. Those initial crude dinosaurs made by silkscreen stencils eventually led him to be a mixed media artist whose artwork can be found in multiple private and public art collections around the world, including several pieces in the Indiana University permanent collection, The Hungarian Multicultural Center in Budapest, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. On an art creation hiatus, General now focuses his energy on helping others achieve their artistic goals. He served most recently for three years as director of a contemporary art gallery in Houston, Texas and Santa Fe, NM until establishing The Duende Art Project in the summer of 2014 combining his passions to champion meaningful art and community betterment. He is also the creative director for the monthly publication Arts+Culture TX magazine.
DENA M. WOODALL, PH.D., ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER
Dena M. Woodall is Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Her publications and exhibitions include Line: Making the Mark (2015), Alexander Archipenko: The Berlin Drawings (2014), Looking at the Overlooked: Michelangelo’s Genii on the Sistine Chapel Ceiling (2013), Princes and Paupers: The Art of Jacques Callot (2013), The Art of Exaggeration (2012), Acid on Metal: The Art of Etching and Aquatint (2011), Drawing from Nature: Landscapes by Liebermann, Corinth, and Slevogt (2010), Going with the Grain: Woodcuts from Houston Collections (2009), and a study of double portraiture in Renaissance Italy (2008). She received her Ph.D. in art history from Case Western Reserve University in 2008. Prior to joining the MFAH, Dr. Woodall was curatorial and research fellow in the prints & drawings department of the Cleveland Museum of Art and research associate at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. She is an affiliated professor in art history at Rice University and a member of the Print Council of America.
NICOLE LONGNECKER, ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER
Owner of Houston’s Nicole Longnecker Gallery, Nicole is from Cambridge, Iowa. Her academic background at Iowa State University includes an MBA and a BA in English and Women’s Studies with a minor in Sociology. During her studies Nicole’s curiosity in the arts and their relationship to our world evolved. This interest centered around the intersection of art, literature, and film and how these vehicles could be used to create narratives and give a wider voice to those who were unable to tell their stories. After a successful C-level business career at companies, non-profits and educational facilities, Nicole is now realizing her life-long passion with her own contemporary art gallery. Nicole is currently and has served on numerous boards of directors and believes in continuing her passion for community involvement through the gallery.
CATHIE KAYSER, BOARD EMERITUS
Cathie Kayser is a Houston artist whose work is in collections in Houston, Los Angeles, Seattle, Cincinnati, and Tel Aviv. She has participated in numerous local and regional group exhibitions. She is a founder of PrintMatters, an arts organization she began with four other artists in 2009. In 2010, they started PrintHouston and Rockin’ Rollin’ Prints. 2014 was the fourth year. Kayser is the studio manager and printing assistant to master printer Patrick Masterson at Burning Bones Press. She works in a variety of printmaking techniques––lithography, woodcuts, intaglio, and monoprints, and teaches workshops in polyester plate lithography.
VIVIAN HORDES, BOARD EMERITUS
Vivian Hordes received her undergraduate and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an emphasis on Design and Filmmaking before moving back to Houston. After attending an experimental printmaking workshop, she began an engaged and passionate exploration of traditional and non-traditional printmaking techniques. Her prints have been exhibited at “The New Orleans Triennial: A southern Perspective on Prints”, a solo exhibition at The Museum of Printing History: “Meditations & Inspirations” where she was honored as the “Undiscovered Printmaker of the Year”, Williams Tower Visual Arts Alliance juried exhibitions, and numerous galleries and Houston public art events. She is a founding member of Printmatters and PrintHouston. Her studio is located at Winter Street Studios.
ANN JOHNSON, BOARD EMERITUS
Ann Johnson is an artist who paints portraits with her feet. Yes her feet! Born in London, England and raised in Cheyenne, WY, Johnson is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University in Texas, (where she now teaches) and received a BS in Home Economics. She has also received an MA in Humanities from the University of Houston-Clear Lake, as well as an MFA from The Academy of Art University, in San Francisco. In 2010 she received the Teaching Excellence Award at Prairie View A&M University, and was awarded Art teacher of the year in the School of Architecture. In 2011 she received the distinguished Presidents Faculty Of The Year award. Primarily a mixed media artist, Johnson’s passion for exploring issues particularly in the Black community has led her to create series’ of works that are evocative and engaging. such as: The Hoop Dreamin Collection:a series of decorative basketball goals that explores the social issue of a Hoop Dream, and It Is The Not Knowing That Burns My Soul, an investigation of exploratory mixed media works that examine the “Black Indian. The latter was included in an exhibition and catalog for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian titled: Indivisible. She has been invited to teach at Tougaloo Art Colony in Jackson, MS in 2009, 2011 and 2013.
